LAKESHORE HARVEST RIDE AGAIN ATTRACTS OVER 400 RIDERS

The Friends of the Blue Star Trail sponsored its 8th annual Lakeshore Harvest Ride on a perfect fall Saturday. Jack Eisinger, Chair of the event and Treasurer of the Friends, reported that for the second year in a row the ride attracted over 400 riders from all over Michigan, Illinois and Indiana. It raised over $26,000 towards construction of the Blue Star Trail which, noted John Adams, President of the Friends, is expected to generate over $100,000 towards actual construction and engineering costs once matching state grants are considered.

Eisinger said “We received many comments from riders about how enjoyable and well-run this event is, which is a tribute to the over 80 local volunteers that handle registration, promotion, buying and distributing food and drinks, placing signs and street markings for the eight routes, and cleaning up afterwards.” He added that “the 15 wineries, orchards, farm stands and artists that were featured stops along the routes expressed appreciation for the exposure and sales that the Ride brings them.” The Friends provide a concierge service to bring cyclists’ purchases back to their parking lot so they don’t have to carry them.

The Ride had two starting locations – the Kal-Haven trailhead in South Haven and Schultz Park in Douglas. Each start had four route options, ranging from 15 to 62 miles.  Riders enjoyed snacks and water at various points of interest along the way (all staffed by volunteers from Friends of the Blue Star Trail) as well as lunch at the Glenn Community Center, Schultz Park, and South Haven.
